Gillmer is a rather puzzling article first describes a specimen which had the forewings purplish-red. He then goes on to describe forms which have either the costal border with a 1.5 mm wide reddish-brown, or the whole margin of the wings to a width of 3 mm surrounded or enclosed with reddish-brown.

It would appear that Gillmer is giving his name rubescens  to all specimens that show orange ior red-brown areas on the wings, and he gives a list of such examples, with varying patterns on both fore and hindwings.

In view of all these contradictions ab. rubscens would appear to be an undetermined form, and could apply to all specimen with any red, orange or reddish-brown scaling or colouration on any wing.
